why do people seem so opposed to this idea? If pets are not people why are they allowed to roam about freely? Why do they have names that suit their "personalities"?

I don't know--seems like a lot of people have high expectations when it comes to dogs--in fact lots of dogs aren't even pets but poorly paid security
