Last friday evening I stood at the bus terminus waiting for a bus home amidst a gaggle of people. Usually it would be late at night about 8 pm and not as crowded but today it was 7 pm and I was in the mood to go home. It was obvious that I would not get into any of the buses until the hooligans have left. I need to cut my hair. So I struck up a conversation with the girl standing closest to me.
Girl number one was short, young, eloquent. She was a third year English & Literature Major planning to become a teacher of high school students. She was not very talkative and she was holding a "family planning poster" from a presentation she had earlier. She lives on campus at the university and is travels home on most weekends, to prevent herself from going crazy. She did not like math and could not help me with my calculus problem. She got unto the 10th bus through the drivers side. She was cool. Buses arrived one at a time, roughly every 10 minutes and usually get swamped even before it stops by middle class people between the ages 20 and 35. So I just stood there with the hooligans that were left.
Girl number 2, appeared to be older (about 29), unmarried with a fake diamond ring on her right hand. At first it appeared that she worked in a bank but she soon told me she did not (I kept mentioning this just to piss her off). She and I were exactly the same age minus 2 days and 13 seconds give or take a day. Partially single (whatever that means) and does not work in a bank. We got on the 16th bus together after much waiting. She looked like a person who works in a bank. She was very forth-coming and likes going to the cinema, oldies music (re: Ben E. King ), going to the beach and restaurants such as BullsEye in New Kingston, 7 Avenue. She was very talkative, and waved her hands around like a flight attendant or somebody who works in a bank. Her job was in a bookshop, learned to dance by watching television and proceeded to give me advice about how not to be boring. Apparently I have not been reading enough books. The day, for her, was good day of dancing and singing christmas corals in the bookshop because it was not a busy day. She was cool. I got off at 8:45pm before she did.
