Traveling without moving » Canadian Dollars

written by owen, published 2018-Aug-21, comment

By far the most plasticy dollar I have ever felt. It sticks to stuff and keeps slipping out of my pocket because it literally has no texture at all. Apart from the braille at the corners to aide the blind. Its colorful but most places that you buy stuff assume you are paying with a card and ask if you want the receipt. Some places do not even accept large bills.

Traveling without moving » Toronto, Suburbs

I have to admire the level of precision that goes into the construction of these housing schemes. Every line, every corner is perfectly even. Most days are over cast and it does not seem to rain that often but its likely to be because it was summer time. Even the wild bushes and weeds are perfectly arranged to the point where you could almost roll around in them without fear.

On this trip abroad I took 1230 photos on my aging point and shoot (Canon PS Elph 300HS) a small potion of which at 30 second videos. I have started sorting through them and carefully choosing the ones to post since my website is currently at 74% of its alloted storage space (2.7gb). On this trip I was not very mobile since I was staying in the suburbs with a new born and a 7 year old who got mad because I did not want to co-op minecraft with him. The suburbs are far away from all the sites and sounds of Toronto. Uber/Taxis would have ate through my budget like a hot knife through cheese and I was not going to do any driving on those crazy highways.

As soon as I touched down FLOW roaming charges were like $100 JMD a minute or something similar. I had only $34 JMD credit on my phone by the time I left the airport. I probably should have done some research on the roaming costs instead of simply guesstimating it. I did see a text about a $999 free incoming call package but I wrote that off as "trash" pretty quickly. Modile phone rates are trash all over the world especially with so many people addicted to it.

I had a great time, none the less. Kensington, Waterparks, Center island, Niagara Falls, walked around to Toronto and made a diamond sword in PS4 Minecraft despite all odds against productive playing. A vodka and coke (with tons of ice) in the club is roughly 8 CAD and parking is 20 CAD at one club. I am not sure if it was because it was close to Caribana or alcohol on a whole is expensive in Canada. Most days were overcast and it rained once - flooded Toronto - and there was a sunny day when the wind chill was not so bad.

Traveling without moving » Yonge St, Toronto

Went into a mall on Queen Street in which I could seriously get lost and never been found. And I do not mean lost like "lost shopping" but lost like a 5 year old at carnival road march. I did not buy anything at the time because they are all pretty much the same American stuff except in 2 languages French and English. I forgot to bring my coins to patronize the street performers and guys giving out free info on Islam.

Despite popular belief there are beggars and street people in Toronto. Or maybe they are just people dressed as hippies dancing in the road high on drugs or something. A large Chinese and Indian population.

Traveling without moving » Niagara Falls

I would say its well worth the 40 CAD per person for the experience alone. Lines move quickly and the boat hold alot of people without being crowd. Its pretty much a 1 hour long trip. Wear shorts because jeans will get wet.

The ship went a bit too close to the falls to the point where I had to put my camera into my pocket because the water spray was running down my face. If they did not provide the red ponchos I would be sucked down to my underwear. I really did not need to be THAT close to the fall. lol.

The tourist on the USA side wore blue and orange ponchos probably because it is a different tour companies or they dont want people jumping off into the water and swimming across. But you can tell the water is deep, vortexs everywhere and there are cliffs on bother sides - IT WOULD NOT BE AN EASY SWIM. I could barely hear the guide on the loud speaker because of the constant hum of falling water but he was not saying much apart from facts and such.

It was a 3 hour drive from where I was staying to get there so....far. Lots to do in the town, go karting, water park, casino. A real tourist trap right beside the falls.
