Hellshire, Beach erosion Oct 2015

Page is part of Blog Jamaica in which you can new article

It is surprising how rapid the progress has been since the last time (Feb 2015). Lots of Sargassum this month. And now the wall and stairs at Prendy's is starting to give way despite all their attempts to re-in-force it. All these shops need to move back away from the shoreline but I am sure it is gonna cost a pretty penny to relocate them.

  1. There were no regulations from the onset at this beautiful beach..which was UDC owned along with other Hellshire areas. There was total disregard for the planning of this area. UDC, with all it's Planners, must have know what would happen if there were no regulations in place in the utilization of the beach. No one cared. The users didn't understand the impact of building there structures out there, in the manner they did. And no-one stepped in to stop them & explain anything to them. Now everyone loses with the erosion of this once beautiful local beach, those who go to the beach & they vendors. So sad.

  7. Thank you for the article Owen. I'm a Jamaican planning a visit back to JA after 6 years and was planning to take my children to Hellshire. I remember Prendy's and it's pretty disappointing to see the loss of the beach.
In your first paragraph, the term is 'A pretty penny' not 'a pretty pen'; it's usage however is correct. I'm sure the cost to relocate would be expensive.
Thanks again for an informative article.

  8. thanx, it is the usual case of poor planning and poor monitoring/education. we just let things run down until its no more. At least the sea and fried fish is still good.
