While the mechanic was busy I ventured off and took a bunch of street photos. I shot the whole day in high-contrast black and white. I got some good shots. Here is the first in a set of 12 that I took that day.
In this set there is this large coconut tree behind this huge concrete wall. You can see that the wall was shorter but they added a second level of blocks. I like to imagine that there is a pool/garden behind the wall but I will probably never know.
Jamaica is not the optimum place to do street photography. Jamaicans are naturally suspicious about your motives. If I could travel more I would probably go to Japan, London or New York and be a tourist but now I am trying to be a tourist in my own country. I have taken street photos before but while on vacation which is easier because you are a tourist and people smell tourist on you.
I am constantly learning and testing new techniques for taking pictures like I am a hunter on safari in a wild jungle. These photos are shot at noon so the lighting is very harsh. In comparison to photos taken in overseas where the sky is always overcast. Added to that the urban landscape in Jamaica is not cluttered with tall buildings or elaborate structures so there is less opportunity of big sharp contrasty shadows that are prominent in most street photography.
I am still getting accustomed to shooting on the street and figuring out which photos work and which arent worth posting. I am almost a month behind in posting because I post in chronological order just so I dont get confused. I need to go out in the morning/evenings so I can get some long shadows. But lunch time is more convenient during the week.
This covid thing is seriously never going to end. I remember watching videos from Japan and having people comment on why some people are wearing masks, lol. btw the sticker on the floor say "Beg yuh, be safe, stand yah suh" - its kinda fuzzy, will take better picture next time.
It is funny the things you notice when you stop and look around. Like I only just noticed that one of the 4 pictures below has a large black rectangle that looks like some kinda portal to another world.
