It would be hard to find a slow jam singjay mix without a Sanchez single onboard. Its hard to pick favourite tracks because the first 10 are pretty much gold but I could shortlist; 2. Old friends, 10. Brown eyes, 14. never dis the man, 18. Unchained, 19. Wherever I lay my hat.

Rocksteady beats tease your ears just long enough for the base guitar to drop in.

Prince - LoveSexy

This probably the weirdest album I have even listen to. The CD is one long track, 44.56 minutes of prince and company just jamming away. If the nude picture on the front wasn't enough they chose a terrible small pink cursive font for the inside booklet making it hard to read. 1988 must have been a crazy year.

Notable quotes;

"Lets drown each other in each other's emotion, bathe with me. Lets cover each other in perfume and lotion. To me its sounds like hiphop beats but its 1995 so I am not sure. ?Not really dancehall but I have never listened to a full Shabba album. Rubbadub? By track 9 it starts to get more familiar but its not really my thing. A mixture of influences.

Select tracks; 2. Shine Eye gal, 9. high seat

"Love di gal dem from outta habour view"

John Holt - Thousand Volts of Holt

I was suprised that I did not know most of John Holts top songs from the 70s but as the Cd progressed it moved up into the era that I could actually remember. I have been lucky to get a bunch of CDs to borrow over the last week to accompany me on the long drives in Christmas traffic.

John Legend's "Gifted" from 2009 was good in the first part until a bunch a rappers came on and disrupted the flow of the whole CD but you can't go wrong with hits like "Used to Love U", and "Ordinary people". Probably my favourite off track is She Don't Have To Know. Seems Kanye's magic touch did wonders for this album.

I never really got into Alicia Keys "Unplugged" from 2005. I think she is obsessed with vocalizing instead of singing the songs. What makes it worse is this is a "Live" recording and falls into the RNB trap which it never manages to escape. Damion Marley comes on at the end with Welcome To Jamrock.

by owen comment
Fri, 01 Dec 2017 07:14:15 -0600 http://owensoft.net/v4/item/2403/ Music CDs and why I prefer them (Music) http://owensoft.net/v4/item/2403/
At this point in writing I have own about 25 music CDs. They are among my favorite things. Cds hold a special place in my heart and since they are a physical medium they are limited in a way that digital media cannot replicate. Apart from video games and computer stuff I dont think there is anything that has been with me for as long as I have had CDs. CDs have certain advantages over digital that I like besides the fact they cost real money and I can only have a limited of them at any one time - mostly because I cannot afford to buy all the CDs I want which is a good thing. Plus it makes the ones I actually have extra special.

I have lost CDs over the years or given them away as gifts, even found some in garbage bins. I never re-buy CDs - it is like a rule I made up for myself. I believe every CD has a story behind it which is why people that give me CDs hold a special place in my heart. Digital MP3 music on the other hand is a case of a too much of a good thing and most mp3s do not have album covers or booklets which makes me sad. There is not such thing are a bad CD. I have gotten CDs that I loved instantly and also CDs that grew on me over time. Everything exists for a time. Somethings come back around and other things pass you by but the only thing that matters are the things that are now.

Cds are particularity hard to get in Jamaica and if you do see them for sale they are really expensive like $20 USD. $10 USD if you are lucky. Often stores will have a ton of Bob Marley Cds, or boot leg mixed CDs. I never buy digital music - seems kinda pointless to me. I usually wait until the CDs reach bargain bin because I have too many hobbies, too little time and I am not about the struggle life. Some times you will find a sketchy dude or a yard sale but those occasions are rare. I often go to people's houses, search their stuff and all I would find are empty cases or disks that are more scratched than sand paper.

I hate mixed CDs. Do not buy them. Definition: A mixed music CD is a CD that is re-released with a rearranged collection of songs; often called "Greatest Hits: " or "Best Of ". Do not buy mixed CDs! Song order is important. Another reason I hate listening to mp3s - the song order can get switched up for various reasons. I avoid Gospel, Country and RnB music because they just don't appeal to me. However I do have an Usher CD which is good.

Cds are often 10x the quality of mp3s. Put a CD in a stereo and you can turn it all the way up and still hear all the instruments. This is really only useful for people who are not already deaf from listening to music too loud. Burnt CDs do not last as long as original CDs. I have original CDs that are probably 15 years old and they still play fine. You are lucky if you can keep a burnt CD 5 years before the label peels off. Avoid burnt CDs unless you just want a quick fix.

I only keep the Cds that I like or hold for purposes of trading or gifting. There is not enough space in the world to store all the CDs that have been published so I have to grade them in some way by listening to them over and over until I come to a conclusion. Heaven help me.

Some of my favourite songs are ones that I first heard on album CDs. And its not like I dispise MP3s - I have a few of them. Even from the days of napster. I even have mp3s of stuff that you cannot even find on the internet anymore like the Indigo Club mixes by waka_x and ufo. MP3s are convenient for portable players and on the computer listening but as I said before music is a "quality" over "quantity" thing for me.

by owen comment
Fri, 27 Oct 2017 19:15:01 -0500 http://owensoft.net/v4/item/2392/ Summer CDs (Music) http://owensoft.net/v4/item/2392/
I only got 5 new CDs this summer as they get harder and harder to find but any I got them cheap. Left of the middle is clearly the best of the bunch even though I had previously ran it into the ground many moons ago in mp3 format. Billy paul was not so bad along with Blue Magic.

The new kids on the block music did not age well at all.

by owen comment
Tue, 29 Aug 2017 19:35:20 -0500 http://owensoft.net/v4/item/2372/ Florence and the Machine - How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful (2015) (Music) http://owensoft.net/v4/item/2372/
By share luck or divine destiny this has become one of my favorite albums. The songs seems to just flow into each other and I love the wild vocal gymnastics, band music and haunting lyrics. "Sometimes I am half and sometimes I am half out because I never close the door". The guy is a Bob marley fan so that made up nearly half his collection. Being a Jamaican I think I have heard every Bob song ever released - totally tired of listening them - on to the new stuff.

The Sizzla CD is clearly a mix, while the others are popular albums from the 90s which I never had access to except for mp3s. It will be interesting to see how quickly I can run through this mix of gangsta rap, pop, dancehall and alternative music. Spragga and Lady Saw from the 90s, "No waan no kiss, no waan no hug, cauw a backshot she love" and "gal a hype up pon you and she no ready yet". The only greatest hits CD that I have is from Sade and recently from Tracy Chapman. They are are basically pointless and often have edited version of songs which are better left unedited. The Snoop Dogg CD (pictured) was the worst of bunch with a song called "Down for my Ns" which is hilarious to listen to in the clean version.

Of the 9 CDs he bought out of the bargin bin only the 4 on the left were even worth listening to. The Snoop dogg was awful and the Alicia Keys was the usual RNB stuff. I am not a fan of RNB but the Usher CD was pretty lit especiall the song little freak (the best beat). The Outkast CD had "Ms Jaskson" on it but I was hoping it was the one with "Hey Ya". The Outcast CD graphic was interesting to say the least.

by owen comment
Sun, 22 Jan 2017 19:15:47 -0600 http://owensoft.net/v4/item/2313/ Tracy Chapman: Greatest hits CD (Music) http://owensoft.net/v4/item/2313/
I usually avoid collections if only because the songs feel out of order but I got into the groove of this one pretty quickly.
